14 Bathroom Design Tips From A Bathroom Designer

design a bathroom

Use Cedreo’s continuous drawing mode to create floor plans from scratch. It’s so easy to use, you can draw most bathroom layouts in 5 minutes or less. But don’t let its simplicity fool you — this bathroom design tool creates stunning designs suitable for professional presentations and marketing materials. A bathroom’s wet area is the portion of the room that’s meant to get wet.

Install a Chic Light Fixture

A bathroom design that delivers style and practicality can be yours – and you’re in the right place to discover how. Whether you’re thinking total transformation, or a cost-effective (and chic) update, we’ve got the lowdown so you can turn a dull, dated or drab room into a star turn. If you have the floor plan for the house, you can import a scalable version in JPEG or PNG format and use it as a sort of stencil to trace the walls. Once the floor plan is important, you can easily create the entire plan, including dimensions and symbols. You can rotate the floor plan to change its orientation on the screen. Whether you're designing a brand new bathroom or planning a renovation, the Mico Design Planner will help you create the ultimate look.

Matching Tile

Toronto-based designer Philip Mitchell painstakingly restored his 18th-century cottage in Nova Scotia to its former glory, with plenty of nods to the home's Colonial roots. This stunning bathroom is living proof, with a cozy arched nook that holds a Waterworks claw-foot bath tub, heavy-patterned wallpaper, and beautiful marble and wood furnishings. For a couple with differing tastes, designer Summer Thornton made it her mission to achieve the perfect balance between the couple's preferences in this Florida getaway. The main bath harmoniously blends the weight the husband likes—handsome stone floors (Paris Ceramics)—and airiness the wife prefers with the “swamp toile” drapery (Raoul Textiles). A single vanity unit requires at least 2 ft of width by 1 ft 8 inches of depth (61 cm by 51 cm).

Your costs will also increase with multiple sink options, such as a dual sink installation. You may opt for concrete flooring to complement an industrial-style bathroom or hardwood flooring to align with darker decor. Homeowners can also splurge on luxurious options such as bamboo or radiant (heated) flooring.

Most brassware is wall mounted, which makes it much harder to fix. Therefore, paying more for brassware at the beginning will pay dividends later on. 'Baths come in many different shapes, styles and materials, and consequently there are baths for every budget, style and need,' continues Yousef Mansuri.

You’ll also find expert tips on storage, flooring, tiles, window dressings and more so you can get every element right. Yes, your bathroom walls might currently be a baby blue or pastel pink that you’d assume is nowhere near in style. But actually, more and more designers are saving this kind of vintage tile. Instead they’re swapping out paint colors, window treatments, lighting, and art—and it is totally changing the way we look at retro bathrooms.

Likewise, a new shower can range from a prefabricated stall unit to a high-end custom shower with mosaic wall and floor tile. Cabinetry is an excellent way to make the most of space, especially in small bathrooms. Size and material determine price, with options including prefabricated fiberboard, metal, hardwood, and more. Customization is also a factor, with ready-to-assemble cabinets being the least costly. Adding new cabinets could cost $200 to $500 per unit, or range between $400 and $4,000. Custom countertops offer the most customization at a higher price tag.

Curved Shower Door

With many bathroom planner software you have to settle for generic and often uninspiring features. Cedreo let you customize almost anything with a wide variety of surface materials. Choose from different tiles, marble, wood, and more to create any style your clients are looking for. Use the bathroom designer to quickly create a 2D floor plan online that ensures you’re making the best use of a bathroom’s space. An upgraded bathroom door or window can compliment your room’s decor and add more functionality to the space. Popular bathroom door styles include French, barn-style, or pocket doors.

How to Pick the Best Bathroom Layout for Your Dream Space

This configuration typically offers more vanity size and style options. Including two sinks (or a double vanity) is a plus in a shared primary bath. On the other hand, choosing a single, bigger vanity offers more countertop space and storage.

Before you start have a clear idea of your budget and an idea of what style you are trying to achieve.2. If you have a small area a wall hung vanity and toilet suite will help maximise space.3. Choose your perfect vanity first and design the bathroom around it.4. In particular, avoid having the toilet in direct eye line to the door way.5.

It is also possible to move a toilet further along the external wall that hosts the soil stack, drilling a new hole through the wall and connecting into the soil stack externally. Then, look at bathroom pictures for inspiration and draw up a wish list that takes into account all potential users, their individual needs and imagine how these might change in the future. And installation can be deceptively tricky, involving plumbing, intricate spatial design and technical skills. Decorator Meredith McBrearty covered the walls and floating sink in a sleek travertine stone (Ann Sacks) to ensure continuity throughout this Dallas powder room.

You can do a decent amount of remodeling work yourself, depending on how extensive the project is. Here’s what you can expect from a professional remodeling job versus one you do yourself. If a clear shower panel isn’t your thing, look at frosted glass that will give a little more privacy. Unique frosting can even feature patterns and images if you want to create something a little more unique. The fewer walls that you knock down, the less you will pay any builder. Plan a clear floor space of at least 30 inches from the front edge of all fixtures (lavatory, toilet, bidet, tub, and shower) to any opposite bath fixture, wall, or obstacle. Or opt for a glass shower door, which makes the bathroom feel more open and light.

If there is no heat, bring in a professional to add a radiator or lay some under-floor heating. Consider upgrading it to a modern flat-panel and higher output radiator to finally say goodbye to those freezing winter showers.

But, if you have the space, we recommend a larger surface or even a double vanity. This will give you plenty of room to store all those bathroom accessories. To get started, simply create a free RoomSketcher account and then use the RoomSketcher App to create a floor plan of your bathroom. Select bathroom vanities, cabinets, fixtures, and more and simply drag them into place.

Well-versed in historic renovations, designer Philip Gorrivan preserved and repurposed original elements of this 270-year-old Connecticut house to pay homage to its revolutionary beginnings. The 1920s bay window was reused in the main bath to usher in light into the space. The upper walls and ceiling are covered in a flowery Josef Frank wallpaper from Svenskt Tenn. Royal Caribbean vs Norwegian Cruise Line NCL: 10 Major Differences Between The Lines

norwegian cruise line vs royal caribbean

Once a passenger cruises with Norwegian Cruise Line and/or Royal Caribbean for the first time they are automatically a member of that cruise line’s loyalty program. For every subsequent cruise thereafter guests will earn points and work their way toward the next loyalty tier to achieve even more rewards for their next cruise vacation. Before embarking on my first cruises with Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line last year, I had no idea that some cruise lines own they very own private islands. Since initially finding out about these unique Caribbean destinations, I have been able to visit all three of the private islands owned and operated by Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean. The ability to unpack in one spot while being transported to great destinations around the world is quite alluring, and keeps frequent cruisers coming back again and again.

How do the itineraries of Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean compare?

Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation. Norwegian Cruise Line's "Free at Sea" might help undecided cruises sway one way or the other. This allows cruisers to select up to five different perks to be included in their cruise fare. These perks include the specialty dining package, shore excursions, Wi-Fi package, beverage package, free airfare and friends/family sail free.

Onboard Activities

The kid’s club is a great place where you can leave your children in a safe and fun environment. In the dining rooms, buffet and restaurants, there will always be culinary options that are well suited for younger children. Norwegian also has O’Sheehans and The Local, which are pub style restaurants that are open 24/7.

Compare: Royal Caribbean vs. Norwegian Cruises

With freestyle cruising, cruise passengers can eat in different restaurants and dining rooms, on their own schedule. Since Royal Caribbean has some incredible big ships, there are multiple entertainment venues onboard. On select ships you’ll find aqua shows, musicals, ice skating shows at the ice rink, comedians and broadway style shows.

Overall, Royal Caribbean and NCL offer a range of pricing options to suit different budgets. However, there are some key differences when comparing the two cruise lines. If you’re traveling with family, one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a cruise line is their kids’ programs. Royal Caribbean and NCL are known for their family-friendly amenities and entertainment options. Norwegian Cruise Line also has a range of outdoor activities, including ropes courses, rock climbing walls, and water slides. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line offer a wide range of options to keep guests entertained throughout their cruise vacations.

Food and Dining

Its venue is quirky, but its presentation and themed food add to the ambiance of this specialty restaurant. While freestyle has been hugely popular with many cruise passengers, it doesn’t suit all. If you cruise with food allergies, having the same table and a consistent waiter works better. In this detailed comparison of Norwegian Vs. Royal Caribbean, you’ll discover their differences and determine the best cruise line for your next vacation at sea. Both the Norwegian cruise line and Royal Caribbean International make mega-ships to attract families. At first glance, they may seem similar and draw the same type of clientele.

Family-Friendly Amenities

I have had the privilege of sailing with Royal Caribbean a couple times now, and have always found something appetizing and delicious onboard! Royal Caribbean tends to offer just one or two main dining restaurants onboard, in addition to the buffet. The line’s Oasis-class ships are the largest cruise ships in the world, with their own central park, Ultimate Abyss Slide, and a boardwalk complete with a carousel. Norwegian shines with The Haven, a suite complex with a private restaurant, sundeck, pool, and lounge.

Plan a legendary vacation

While aboard nearly any Norwegian cruise ship, you'll mostly see families, couples and singles that range in age from their 30s to 60s. Both Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean cater to families and couples, though NCL does a better job of catering to solo travelers, thanks to its unique Studio staterooms designed for one. The cruise line also has a fun atmosphere and some communal spaces for single passengers to hang out. The casino onboard Norwegian cruises is large, has an enclosed smoking area (on certain ships) and even has a small buffet. There are plenty of activities, shows and a supervised kid’s club and teen club that children of all ages can enjoy. Always check with your travel agent or on the Norwegian website to find the best options for you and current free at sea promotions.

If you’re cruising with family or a group, consider the Family Suites, which can accommodate larger groups and include extra amenities to keep everyone comfortable and entertained. Both these large scale cruise lines specialize in offering something for everyone onboard their ships, and are great about being cruise lines that caters to the whole family. Because of this, both Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean can be great options for multi-generational vacations.

Now, the line’s newest ships offer more bells and whistles than a shoreside resort. NCL has 14 homeports on the North American mainland where ships depart seasonally to year-round. They offer several itineraries, including the Caribbean, Bermuda, Bahamas, Mexico and Alaska.

In general, Royal Caribbean's prices are reasonable, but there is a marked difference between the price of sailings on the line's newest ships and the cost to sail on its older ones. You can also expect to pay extra for many of the onboard alternative dining options, regardless of ship age. Both lines also have studio cabins available on some of their latest vessels. These rooms are built and priced for one person, allowing solo travelers to avoid paying a single supplement. Passengers booked in Norwegian's studio cabins also have access to a dedicated lounge, where they can make friends with other cruisers sailing by themselves.

There are no “formal nights” like on other cruise lines and the only stipulation is you can’t wear your bathing suit in the main dining rooms. Both NCL and RCI feature traditional main dining rooms offering an assortment of culinary delights. The main dining room on both ships serves the meals that are part of your cruise package, and so are at no additional cost to you. However, their Spectrum of the Seas, a Quantum Ultra Class vessel, offers itineraries out of Singapore and was purpose-built for the Asian market. This area features a concierge, sun deck, private pool, hot tubs, and bar. Haven guests enjoy a quieter space, with fewer people and upgraded amenities like padded loungers.

Both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian larger vessels provide great Alaskan cruises for families. If you’re cruising to Alaska, who can beat the views of a fjord from 300 feet in the air? Another area where Royal Caribbean does exceptionally well is with its active pursuits. They include innovative -- and often first-at-sea -- activities like Sky Pad bungee trampolining, carousel rides, FlowRider surfing, Ripcord by iFly simulated skydiving, rock climbing and ziplining. Whether you want your cruise to be relaxing or adventurous, you won't be disappointed with Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Line. Both offer plenty of semi-private areas for reading, outdoor loungers for soaking up the sun and adults-only spaces if your goal is simply to escape the kids and soak in the pool or hot tub.

How To Plan A Memorable Norway Northern Lights Cruise In 2024

northern lights cruise

Highlights include a visit to Unesco-listed Vega Island, a centre for the production of duck eiderdown, and a planned landing at Jan Mayen where the Beerenberg volcano is the world’s northernmost active volcano, last erupting in 1985. The new kid on the block along the Norwegian coast is Havila Voyages, which has a fleet of four eco-friendly ships that launched in 2022. The line has a variety of options to sail part or all of the way along the classic route from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, with the round trip taking 11 nights. Observation lounges have glass roofs and reclining chairs to view the Arctic sky and you can push a button on the cabin telephone to be woken up in the night if the lights appear. It also has a northern lights promise — if the phenomenon doesn’t appear during a 12-day sailing, passengers get a free week-long voyage. No photograph or television documentary can prepare you for seeing the northern lights in real life.

Nunavut in the heart of Canada’s High Arctic is a prime aurora borealis viewing country, with its close proximity to the North Pole and vast expanses of tundra. Consider visiting a remote traditional Inuit community for an unparalleled night of dazzling aurora displays. Every year, millions of tourists flock to the Arctic for a chance to witness the phenomenon of the Northern Lights. To increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, be prepared to venture into the heart of the Arctic, to destinations such as Greenland, Iceland, Northern Canada and Northern Norway.

Narvik, Norway

While it’s never a guarantee that the Northern Lights will be visible, one way to stack the deck in your favor is to be on a cruise ship that can move in search of the lights, typically in the Arctic. We will attempt to enter Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord, a remote and rarely visited fjord system with countless opportunities for exploration, located within the Northeast Greenland National Park. Cruising through Kong Oskar Fjord, we marvel at the geological beauty of the mountains. We will then head south along the coast of Liverpool Land, with our passage dependent on ice conditions. Enjoy a Zodiac cruise through spectacular Trollfjord, a gorge flanked by steep mountains and so narrow that it can only be accessed by small ships. In the Lofoten Islands, voted by National Geographic as one the of the most beautiful destinations in the world, we stroll through picturesque villages dotted with red and white fishers’ huts, surrounded by soaring granite peaks.

Cruises sail to and from Portsmouth and to increase your odds of seeing the light show there’s an overnight stay in Tromso, where you can visit the Polar Museum or embark on an exhilarating husky or reindeer sledding ride. You’ll be joined by experts from the conservation charity Orca who will be out on deck to host seabird and wildlife spotting sessions. Then it’s on to Tromsø, Norway’s northernmost city, for two days of Arctic adventures, before sailing to Atla, a town known for its bluebird days (ideal for Northern Lights viewing later) and ancient rock carvings for two days. Because it’s often chilly in this part of the world (especially at night), each passenger is given a waterproof polar expedition jacket upon arrival. The sailings will take place on the expedition vessel Greg Mortimer, which can hold 132 passengers in 79 cabins (most have private balconies for auroral viewing). From there, you’ll visit the Westfjords region of Iceland (the northwestern peninsula), with its colorful small towns, turbulent waterfalls, and fjords rich in bird-viewing opportunities.

But there will also be activities geared to exploring parts of the world filled with many other natural, cultural, and man-made wonders. Iceland, Greenland, and polar regions around the Northwest Passage promote some of their active, adventurous cruises around the equinoxes in September and March as northern lights viewing opportunities as well. Lines cruising in these regions include Hurtigruten, Silversea, Lindblad Expeditions, Viking Cruises, Quark Expeditions, Adventure Canada, and others. Remember that seeing these lights doesn't involve a cruise director flipping on a switch.

Kayaks offer a unique opportunity to view marine and land mammals, coral reefs, tropical fish, sea birds and an astonishing range of rainforest birds. We will bring our snorkelling gear with us during our paddles and take advantage of any opportunities to view marine life up close. Kayakers in wild temperate regions will have a unique wildlife experience, with possible encounters with seals and basking sharks. You will have the opportunity to view some of the largest sea bird colonies in the northern hemisphere.

The Nordic Spa area is one of our favorite parts of the ship with its ice room, sauna, and hot tub. Charming and postcard-pretty, Stavanger is an idyllic coastal town, famous for its perfectly preserved wooden buildings (some dating back to the 18th century) and miles of pristine white sand. Our Scandinavian tour packages offer a deeply immersive experience — the perfect Nordic adventure is waiting for you. There’s more than one way to sail with us and discover the many wonders of the Norwegian coast. While Cunard’s 2,996-passenger Queen Anne will offer oodles of nightly performances once it launches in 2024, one of the most dazzling shows could be the one Mother Nature puts on. Want to book flights and accommodation with us or simply want some additional information?

Hand-crafted Arctic Cruises

Seeing the Northern Lights is one of those magical experiences on nearly every traveler’s bucket list due to the surreal way light moves in waves of green color across the nighttime sky. Our Scenic Discoveries are designed to allow you to enjoy seeing the world from a unique perspective of our ship. The Northern Lights (aurora borealis) are one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world – and the advantage of viewing them on a cruise is the sky is unpolluted, so you get the full spectrum of colours.

northern lights cruise

Both Hurtigruten Expeditions and the Hurtigruten’s Norwegian Coastal Express, offer a good number of itineraries that showcase the Northern Lights. The Coastal Express serves as both a passenger cruise line and a lifeline for Norwegian coastal residents and these working ships transport locals’ cars, fjord towns’ freight and up to 1,000 total passengers on any given day. Along the coast of Norway, the Northern Lights can make appearances as early as September and as late as May. Hurtigruten offer a variety of voyages, including an epic 13-day trip among Norway’s fjords, mountains and islands as you travel from Bergen to Kirkenes.

Norway isn’t the only spot to see the Northern Lights – all of northern Scandinavia enjoy the lightshow in the autumn and winter months. The bonus of cruising during those times is that you’ll get much more daylight to appreciate the scenery of Northern Norway and enjoy daytime activities and excursions. In February and March, the winter landscapes combined with the sunrise and sunset can be absolutely magical. One of our world’s most intriguing natural phenomena, colorful aurora borealis displays are caused by particles released by the Sun interacting with the Earth’s magnetic field.

Over the course of 13 days, a luxurious Viking ocean ship transports guests from London to Amsterdam, then all the way up the coast of Norway and north of the Arctic Circle, before returning back south to the Norwegian city of Bergen. (Although some sailings operate in reverse.) The Norwegian fjords themselves are a sight to behold — and if they're paired with the northern lights, that's all the better! The sailings run from January to March when daylight is limited in the Arctic Circle, making for prime aurora opportunities. Rates start from $4,999 per person in 2023, and it should be noted that Viking is an adults-only cruise line.

The expedition vessels are strategically positioned in areas with minimal light pollution, maximizing the chances of observing the vibrant colours and dancing lights of the Northern Lights against the Arctic night sky. Passengers will enjoy the magical display from the comfort of the ship, creating a truly extraordinary and unforgettable experience. The most affordable option on this list, British cruise line P&O operates 12-day sailings to Norway year-round, but during the auroral season, there's a strong chance you'll see the northern lights while onboard. Guests embark in Southampton, England, before sailing north to Norway, traveling as far north as Tromsø, well north of the Arctic Circle. We recommend splurging on a room with windows for the best northern lights viewing options. However, those in interior cabins can always run up on deck — which you should do anyway to witness the full grandeur of the atmospheric phenomenon.

While the best time to see the northern lights is in the northern winter, this is flipped for the aurora australis, aka the southern lights. Within the United States, Alaska is definitely the best place to visit the northern lights due to how far north it is. Ideally, you start in Anchorage or Fairbanks and drive into Denali National Park. Other winter activities in Alaska, such as dogsled mushing and snowmobiling, will keep you busy and satisfied, even on days when you aren't lucky enough to get a glimpse of the lights. Finding the best place to see the northern lights is critical, but it's not the only detail that matters. Before you go aurora chasing, brush up on the facts about this dazzling natural spectacle.

The aurora borealis originates on the sun’s surface with a massive explosion of electromagnetic matter, which projects a stream of charged particles known as solar wind into space. When these particles approach Earth a few nights later, they distort our magnetic field. The excited, ionised atoms that enter our atmosphere through the poles emit light which, when emitted on a large scale, causes the phenomenon of the Southern and Northern Lights. Northern Lights experiences are best with a dark sky as the aurora is not strong enough to outshine the sunlight. Create a very personal souvenir as you go in search of the northern lights with an art session on Bolette and Borealis; watercolour classes to help you capture the awe-inspiring night-time display are held aboard both ships in the Olsen Art Studio.

You’ll need to remove them when going indoors or on the ship, but they will keep you steady on the snow and ice. Yet the longer you spend watching a display unfold, the more you will appreciate the movement, and the pulsing colors. After a few minutes, you’ll begin to understand all the myths and legends that are linked to the aurora from various cultures around the world. Although cameras with a long exposure pick out the vibrant colors, many people complain that an aurora sighting looks milky, or in the cases of some weaker displays, like a cloud. Modern cameras are so much better at detecting light and especially color at night than the human eye.

The Restaurant - this is another sit-down restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We went once or twice on ocean days as it was on a lower deck and better for motion sickness. If you like seafood, at dinner there were always steamed king crab legs, freshly made sushi, and on various days there were scallops, soft shell crabs, British style Fish n Chips, Norwegian Salmon, Lobster, and much more. Like all the other ocean class ships, the Viking Venus is very spacious and luxurious with interesting artwork displayed throughout the ship.

Cruising Free was founded in 2010 and is the host agency division of the well-known and established Cruise Brothers Travel Agency, created on the belief that travelers can become travel agents. Of course we find that for some their passion turns into a full-time business, but for most it remains an extra source of income and being a part of a fun community of travel lovers. Cruising Free is designed to become whatever the new agent wishes it to become...with no obligations or quotas. Cruise Brothers is one of the largest family owned cruise travel agencies in the United States.

My suggestion, if you are willing to put some effort in, is to try this opportunity. If it is not for you, then try something different. Travel is relaxing, and doing it at reduced rates or virtually free is even better. I have taken advantage of free cruises from Carnival, and soon Princess, and NCL. I have also taken advantage of deeply discounted cruises from Disney, Royal Caribbean multiple times and Celebrity. The Cruising Free program also offers various sales contests throughout the year where agents can win free cruises, onboard credits, and gift cards.

Cruise Brothers is also a member of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which is the world’s largest cruise association. With the best commission structure in the industry, as well as volume pricing, i have never lost a sale due to pricing. I do not have a sales website as I do all sales directly with clients, and there are a ton of reasons why this approach works much better - to many to list. With Cruise Brothers, you are an agent / employee of the company, working from the comfort of your own home.

We will display all commissions in complete transparency on your commission dashboard located on our intranet site I have been very successful due to word of mouth, repeat customers, and ability to build groups, with over $150K booked and/or sailed (and another $15K in cancelled trips) in just over 16 months. Much of what you need for daily life onboard is located at the top of the ship between Decks 9 and 14. Highlights include the sliding glass dome-enclosed Lido Pool area, which also has a giant LED screen; the Explorer’s Central and Cafe/Crow’s Nest, which serves as a combination observation lounge, coffee and liquor bar, shore excursions office and card/games room. Popular restaurants such as the New York Deli and Pizza eatery, the Dive-In burger eatery, the Lido Market buffet and Canaletto Italian eateries are also here.

She’s also quite old in style, which has pros and cons – she’s not got many balconies or indeed much choice at all when it comes to cabin options, but she’s also really easy to navigate. The ship debuted in 2016 to a lot of pomp – this was the first new ship to launch for Holland America in six years and she helped to really bring the cruise line up to date with her stunning interior design. Overall, Holland America ships are seen as some of the most stylish in the world, without being overly glitzy or kitsch.

On most Alaska sailings, Holland America cruisers are 60 to 80 percent North American, although this percentage skews towards Australian and New Zealand cruisers when the ship comes Down Under. However, you will still find many nationalities onboard, with Americans, Canadians, New Zealanders and Australians making up the majority of the passenger base. With an average age of 55, Holland America passengers skew slightly older than those of some major lines. On Alaska cruises, about 80 percent of cruisers are older than 50; about 40 percent are over 65. In general, Alaska cruises and those taking place during the Australia and New Zealand school holidays attract more families.

From the symphonic orchestral beauty of the Lincoln Center Stage to the soulful, dance-floor-burning hits of B.B. King's Blues Club to the sing-along atmosphere of Billboard Onboard, you're guaranteed to find something your ears will enjoy. A three-story atrium midship sports a curvy green glass stairway crowned by a colossal Waterford Crystal compass. In the elevator lobbies, oversize urns sprout artificial foliage and busts of the Dutch royal family mix it up with ornate metal settees.

Also, as noted on the deck plan, VH Category Verandah Staterooms on Deck 4 have views that are obstructed by the lifeboats. The smallest ship in the Holland America fleet is the MS Volendam, which was launched in 1999. She has an internal volume of 61,214 gross tons and a passenger capacity of 1,432. Her sister ship MS Zaandam has the same passenger capacity, but a slightly larger internal volume by just 182 gross tons. The results are really positive, with reviews mentioning how clean and welcoming the ship feels. What also stands out is the service – while some people aren’t as happy with the standards on the slightly newer ships, on MS Nieuw Amsterdam the crew are very highly spoken of.

The best of Noordam's onboard programming skews toward the educational, such as cooking presentations, Microsoft-sponsored computer workshops and BBC Earth documentary screenings. On our Alaska and New Zealand sailings, the piano bar was about as rowdy as things got, with merry singalongs running until midnight. Australian and New Zealand cruises attract a slightly more lively crowd, although the vibe still tends to be low-key. King's Blues Club is the top pick for those seeking some less sedate late-night fun. Cabins to avoid would be at the very top and forward part of the ship for those with motion sickness issues and cabins in the forward to midships portion of Deck 1 to avoid noise from late night performances in the Music Walk, which is directly above.

Although the ship accommodates all ages, Rotterdam’s guests largely tend to be of the Baby Boomer and early Generation X age groups, averaging between 55 and 65 years. On our Amsterdam-based cruises, 65 to 70% of guests were from Holland and Belgium, although announcements remained in English first, then Dutch. The ship welcomes people from all walks of life and provides specific gatherings for LGBTQ, Single and AA guests.

The negative reviews of MS Volendam do focus on the age of the ship though – she has been through renovations, but there are a lot of signs of how old she is, and passengers do notice them. If you don’t mind her feeling a little worn-in then you’ll still have a great time. Negative reviews tend to focus on the entertainment – both the lack of choice and also the quality, with some reviewers talking about how the evening acts are average but not particularly exciting. Guests criticise the quality of the entertainment too, which may be a sign that guests of other cruise lines with Broadway-style shows are trying the newer Holland America ships, and feeling disappointed with the comparison. However, the reason she is a little lower is something I alluded to with MS Rotterdam – to guests, it feels like the newer, bigger ships have lost a little of the Holland America magic, and the crew service isn’t quite as good when there are more passengers to handle. I think MS Rotterdam scores slightly lower than MS Nieuw Statendam due to teething problems.

What will cost you extra is all drinks beyond water, tea, basic coffee and some juices; all specialty restaurants; most fitness classes; spa and salon services; shore excursions; gratuities; laundry and purchases from any of the onboard shops. Holland America Line cruisers usually run 50 or older and are evenly split between being retired and employed -- the longer the cruise, the older the demographic and the more retired passengers there are. They tend to be foodies and music-lovers (two things for which HAL prides itself), and most are from the U.S. and Canada, though about 20 percent of the passengers are international, with the U.K. Still, it’s worth bearing the review comments in mind because the ships are different, and will suit different cruise guests. The larger, more modern ships have more to do onboard, and they’re much more contemporary, but you can expect to pay a price that reflects that.

Negatives are the lack of real excitement during the day, and limited options at night, including a lack of quality to the evening entertainment when compared with other cruise lines. Some reviews do mention her feeling a little older too, but it’s a minor quibble generally – more reviews comment on how clean and well-kept she is. The Pinnacle-class ships are very popular with the cruise line’s regular guests, since they offer more spacious public areas and staterooms without really losing the feel of a smaller ship, even if they’re somewhat larger than the older ships in the fleet. Extra fee dining on Rotterdam includes Tamarind, which is quite possibly the best pan-Asian eatery afloat. But you can also choose the excellent Pinnacle Grll steakhouse or the upscale Rudi’s Sel De Mer, a French seafood bistro with a twist). An additional plus is that room service is complimentary (unless ordering specific a la carte priced items), with courses delivered punctually and, when applicable, piping hot.

Noordam has an impressive number for such a small ship, which means there is seldom a wait for those who prefer not to take the stairs. As in other HAL vessels, some impressive and eclectic artwork provides lovely visual surprises throughout the ship. Historic photos of HAL cruisers from days gone by line the hallways and are a good fit for the ship's traditional feel.

During the day things are more sedate, which may suit some people more than others – if you like a long list of activities, you might feel a little bored. So instead, I’ve visited three of the biggest cruise review websites in the world – Cruise Critic, Cruiseline.com and TripAdvisor. And using those websites I’ve found the average review score for all 11 ships in the fleet, and I’ve based this ranking on putting those scores in order. The biggest downsides of the ship were related to the number of people onboard compared to the size of the public spaces. For example, it was often very difficult to find pool chairs at either the main or the aft pools and waiting in line for meals or popular events was very much the norm. If peace and quiet is what you're seeking, the key is to find spaces of solitude wherever you can.

Because, unfortunately, I’ve not yet had the pleasure of sailing on every Holland America ship. In this guide, I’ve ranked all 11 Holland America ships from best to worst, but I wanted to clarify exactly how I’ve done that.

There's also the aft open air SeaView Pool and Bar, where smoking is permitted. Overall, the flow here is good but can be a little challenging when crossing from one side to the other with access blocked on the right side of Deck 11 for crew. Like most new ships, Rotterdam is laid out with public areas concentrated at the top and bottom of the ship, with decks of accommodations sandwiched between.

This is particularly true of the line's Alaska and Canada/New England itineraries. Meanwhile, choose an older ship and you’ll still get the great service and food standards that the cruise line is known for, but with a much more intimate atmosphere and potentially a lower fare. Sister ship to the MS Zaandam, her design is very similar, meaning she has a very simple layout and she is lacking in a lot of entertainment facilities and cabin options, including those with a balcony. Guests don’t seem to mind the lack of balconies, which is understandable since they know what they’re booking when they choose their cruise. The dated style of the ship doesn’t get much of a mention either – again, guests on Zaandam seem to have a good idea of what to expect, and love the ship for her smaller, more personable atmosphere.

Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. Our partners who list cruise pricing on Cruise Critic are required to provide prices for cruise only or cruise packages, per person, double occupancy, and are based on specific cabin types and sailing dates, and may not be available for all cabin types/sailings. When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. Passengers onboard Holland America Line's ships love the line's dedication to traditional cruise activities, including afternoon tea and ballroom dancing, but they also flock to the line's newer options.
